Assessment and Grading
It is important to ensure understanding is being nurtured and all needs are being met. We assess progress regularly, using informal questioning and discussion, self-evaluation, peer feedback, and teacher review of each student’s work.
Our approach is broader than the Cambridge system and includes teacher assessment in order to consider:
- How does an individual child learn most effectively?
- Have I enabled each child to achieve the learning objective?
In small classes, we build a detailed profile of each child’s progress, to inform further progress and development. We work in partnership with both parents and students and regularly communicate progress with parents and students to ensure continued success.
The Grading System
SIS awards grades twice yearly to communicate information about students’ academic and effort performance in each subject. This allows a regular review of student’s progress and performance between teacher, student, and parent. The grading evaluates a student’s current performance for the semester and is awarded based on the teacher’s everyday observations, experience, assessment, and individual student’s performance. For Year 9 and Year 10, there will be term tests in Autumn, which provide an in-depth evaluation of the students’ academic abilities. These tests are also delivered to prepare students to take the Cambridge formal exams.
Year 1 students will receive a feedback sheet expressing their levels in the four main subjects: Danish, English, Maths, and Science instead of grades.
Primary students (Years 2-4) will receive academic grades in all subjects. Their grades are based on their work output in the lessons, homework, tests, and class participation. The subject teacher will be giving the grades.
The class teacher will provide a general work effort grade (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) based on the student’s general behavior and readiness.
Middle school and Secondary students (Years 5-10) receive an academic and an effort grade in all subjects.
We use the Danish “7trins-skala” for the grades. Here, you can see a chart describing the grades and their meaning.
